Discovering Your Theoretical Orientation

Your theoretical orientation is the lens through which you will understand your clients, build therapeutic relationships, and choose interventions. It shapes what you listen for, the questions you ask, how you respond to a client's pain, and how you define progress. Most counselors' orientations evolve across their careers — this tool is a snapshot of where your convictions lean right now.

You will respond to 76 statements about people, problems, and therapy. When you finish, you will receive a Theoretical Orientation Development Profile: your scores across 15 theoretical approaches, in-depth feedback on your three strongest kinships, and guidance for building the knowledge, skills, and awareness each calls for.

Directions

Rate each statement from 1 (strongly disagree) to 7 (strongly agree). Answer from your convictions about people and change — not what you think you should believe. There are no right answers. Plan for about 15–20 minutes.

Please read: The Theoretical Orientation Scale (© Smith, 2010) is an educational self-discovery tool. It has not been scientifically validated and claims no psychometric properties. Your results are a starting point for reflection and supervision conversations — not a definitive classification of who you are as a counselor. Your answers and results remain in this browser window. Nothing is sent to Choosing Memento Vivere, stored in WordPress, or included in an AI request. Closing or refreshing this page clears your answers.
